Delhi High Court Directs Govt to Appoint ASHA Workers in Delhi
In a significant move aimed at improving healthcare in marginalized communities, on 23.2.2023, the Delhi High Court directed the Government of NCT of Delhi to expedite the appointment of Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers in Delhi.
The PIL, filed under Chhote Lal v. Govt of NCT of Delhi (WP(C) No.10846 of 2015), sought the appointment of two ASHA workers for Chilla Khadar, which had no such personnel at the time. The petition also called for the provision of essential healthcare items, including Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) packets, paracetamol tablets, iron and folic acid tablets, baby suspension weighing machines, baby blankets, warm bag torches, and other basic necessities.
In addition to addressing immediate healthcare needs, the petition urged the Delhi Government to fill all ASHA worker vacancies across the region within a specified timeframe. The appointment of ASHA workers is a vital step in providing primary healthcare, maternal and child health services, and awareness programs in marginalized communities.
Conclude the process of appointment of ASHA workers, if the same has not been done, as expeditiously as possible, preferably within a period of six weeks from today,” the court noted in its order.
The case of Chhote Lal v. Govt of NCT of Delhi serves as a precedent for other regions facing similar challenges. It emphasizes the necessity of proactive governance and judicial oversight to uphold the right to health, particularly for vulnerable populations. The implementation of the High Court’s directive will not only improve healthcare access in Delhi but also reaffirm the commitment to achieving universal health coverage in India.
